St. Joseph's also undertook to write a news release honoring Derrick's work at their Academic Affairs Department to print in East Valley news publications and in St. Joseph's 'It's About Life' monthly bulletin. It reads as follows:

Former Queen Creek Resident Begins Graduate Studies at Harvard University

Tom Hull, a former Queen Creek resident, recently began classes at Harvard University to begin his graduate studies in neurosciences and its tie to learning theory.

Before leaving for Harvard, Tom worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center while receiving his master’s degree in education technology from Arizona State University. While at St. Joseph’s, Tom helped attending physicians develop online curricula for the hospital’s residency programs. The Blackboard program streamlines the education process for medical residents by allowing hospital faculty to create web pages to post files, discussion boards and tests to systemize the teaching process.

“The implementation of Blackboard has the potential to enrich medical education and mitigate burn-out among medical residents,” says Tom. “This puts St. Joseph’s in a unique position as a leader of the medical education tie into the Internet culture.”

Before leaving for Harvard, Tom received an award by St. Joseph’s Academic Affairs team to recognize his dedication of bringing education and technology together in graduate medical education.

Tom became interested in education while volunteering at a Vietnamese refugee community in Melbourne, Australia after creating English classes to help the refugees connect with their English speaking children.. He received his bachelor’s degree in Anthropology at Northern Arizona University in 2006.
